The fly was originally selected as a logo for DEM-DEC as it has long been a symbol of decay, rot, corruption and death, especially in Western art. It also carries apt connotations of contagion, threat, and disease. It therefore seemed an appropriate symbol for the phenomenon of democratic decay. Many users also see the logo as a bee, which captures democratic renewal.
